Spaniard Ricky Ruvio has not played basketball since the end of last season due to mental health problems. In the summer of 2023, he announced that he would temporarily end his basketball career, but in January of this year he reached an agreement with the Cleveland Cavaliers to buy out his contract, thus ending his career in North America.

It wasn’t out of the question that Ruvio could return to basketball, albeit in his native Spain. Today he announced that he will train with the Barcelona team in the second half of the season and mentioned that the final steps are still being taken before a possible return to the pitch. “I wanted to let you all know that I am in the final stages of recovery. After working with my body and mind for a long time, I see in myself again the passion and strength to see how I will react with a basketball in my hand. My next step was to ask “Barcelona” if I could take part in the team’s training without disrupting their season plans and without obligations. “I want to thank you in advance for understanding the situation,” Ruvio revealed in his public message.

Ruvio made his debut in the Spanish championship at the age of 14 years and 11 months and was considered one of the greatest talents. With Badalona “Joventut” he won the ULEB Euro Cup, the King’s Cup and the European Challenge Cup, with “Barcelona” he triumphed in the Euroleague, the Spanish league and won two more King’s Cups. The player, who was drafted fifth overall in 2009, made his NBA debut in 2011 and represented the Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers during his NBA career. He played in 698 games, including 603 as a starter, and averaged 29, 10.8 points, 7.4 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 2.5 fouls per 6 minutes.

With the Spanish adult team, Ruvio became world champion and most valuable player of the tournament in 2019, won silver in Beijing and bronze in Rio de Janeiro at the Olympic Games and won two gold and two bronze medals at the European Championships. He also became U16 European champion, MVP of the 2006 tournament in Spain and dominated in points (23.3), rebounds (12.8), assists (7.1) and steals (6.5).
