After the historical trend reversal – in 2022 the heat pump was the most sold heating system in Austria for the first time – its catch-up effects continued into the first half of 2023. The failure of the Renewable Heat Act in its original form and the lack of new building construction led to a sharp market decline in the third quarter. The announcement of new higher federal and state funding by our government and the stubborn denial of the urgency for consistent climate protection measures brought the market almost to a standstill in the fourth quarter. “Waiting and doing nothing is the wrong thing to do in the current situation, the perceived security due to falling energy prices is deceptive, because climate change and its consequences can only be achieved through a rapid exit from fossil energy systems,” emphasizes Association President Freimüller.
The first market data for 2023 proves this situation. The massive slump of around 25% in the entire heating market has also hit heat pumps hard, as the heating technology with the highest sales in Austria. The plan to achieve the record sales of 2022 with around 50,000 newly installed heat pumps in 2023 was not achieved. Association President Richard Freimüller will provide answers and background information as well as an outlook for 2024 at the press breakfast.
One thing is clear, however: in order to achieve the urgently needed decarbonization of the building stock in Austria, all fossil heating systems must be replaced as quickly as possible. In order to achieve our climate goals, at least 60,000 new heating heat pumps must be installed per year. We are currently a long way from this goal. It is questionable whether public funding policy can replace a ban on fossil energy technologies.
However, the Austrian heat pump industry is well prepared and is ready as a competent and reliable partner for the “heating replacement year 2024”.

Excitement surged as travelers quickly secured tickets for a Delta Air Lines flight specifically organized for observing the upcoming total solar eclipse.
Enthusiastic solar eclipse enthusiasts have already reserved all the seats on Delta Flight 1228 scheduled for April 8, as confirmed by a Delta spokesperson to FOX Business. This special flight was unveiled the day before.
The flight, set to journey from Austin to Detroit, has been strategically timed to provide passengers with the best opportunity to safely witness the solar eclipse at its peak and spend ample time directly within the path of totality, according to a Delta press release.
NASA has indicated that the total solar eclipse on April 8 will first be visible in North America in Mexico around 11 a.m. local time, with the eclipse’s path expected to progress through certain American states later in the afternoon.
Warren Weston, Lead Meteorologist at Delta Air Lines, mentioned that this will be the final total eclipse visible over North America until 2044.
Flight Details and Viewing Experience
Delta will utilize an A220-300 aircraft for this special flight, offering exceptional viewing opportunities due to the plane’s extra-large windows.
The company emphasized that while the flight plans for DL 1228 on April 8 have been optimized for maximum time within the path of totality, external factors like weather and air traffic control could potentially impact the schedule.
Additionally, Delta has five other flights scheduled for the same day, promising prime opportunities for eclipse viewing.
Safety Precautions and Eclipse Facts
NASA advises individuals planning to watch the solar eclipse to use specialized eclipse glasses to prevent eye injuries. It is only safe to remove these glasses during totality, which may last only a minute or two.
The most recent total solar eclipse occurred in December 2021, but it was only visible to individuals in Antarctica within the path of totality, as per NASA.
In the U.S., the last total solar eclipse was witnessed in 2017. The upcoming eclipse in April is anticipated to last more than twice as long as the 2017 event and cover a path nearly twice as wide, according to Weston.
