Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Kaliningrad, the Russian exclave on the border with Poland and Lithuania. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, this is not a message to the North Atlantic Alliance. According to him, the trip is part of normal work on Russian territory.
Putin arrived in Kaliningrad on Thursday morning. His visit immediately sparked speculation as the Kremlin recently claimed the exclave bordering the alliance states was under threat, the Sky News website reported.
According to Peskov, this is not a message to the NATO countries. “A visit to Kaliningrad is a normal task for the president,” he told RIA Novosti.
“When the President visits the regions of the Russian Federation, it is not a message to the NATO countries. It’s the main thing the president does,” he added.
However, he then began warning about the danger he believes NATO poses to Russia for the Russian broadcaster Channel One. “You can see what militaristic sentiment there is now in Europe on the side of the neighboring Baltic states, etc. These are countries that are permeated by Russophobic sentiments and are withdrawing more and more military installations on their territory,” he explained.
“Of course it’s all dangerous. Additional measures are needed to reliably ensure the security of our country,” he added.
The alliance countries assume in their plans that if Russia decides to attack NATO, it will use Kaliningrad to do so. According to the Bundeswehr, Moscow would move troops and medium-range missiles into the exclave. From there it would attack the Suval corridor connecting Kaliningrad to Belarus via Lithuania.
