Estonian Chief of General Staff Martin Herem explained why more and more countries are warning of a Russian attack on the North Atlantic Alliance. In his opinion, Moscow can arm itself more than all of Europe combined. In addition, it is capable of recruiting hundreds of thousands of soldiers into the army. The West assumed that Russia was capable of producing a million artillery shells per year. However, Herem warned in an interview with the Bloomberg agency that Moscow could produce many times that amount.
“Many people thought they could no longer produce, but now the facts tell us otherwise. They can produce more, much more ammunition,” he said.
According to him, NATO assumed that Russia’s rearmament would reach a limit beyond which it could no longer go. But that didn’t come true. “The Allies had to rethink their thinking,” he noted.
In addition to armament, he also warns of a possible increase in the number of soldiers. In his opinion, Russia can recruit hundreds of thousands more.
According to Herem, the countries in the alliance are not threatened by an attack from Russia today or tomorrow. However, there could be less aggression towards NATO once it no longer needs its resources in Ukraine.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov also warned in January that Moscow could rearm faster than Kiev, The Kyiv Independent pointed out.
“Russia significantly outperforms us in daily artillery attacks. In various areas of the front and in the phases of combat, they fired five to ten times more artillery shells than the Ukrainian armed forces,” the Ukrainian minister said.
