The star system T Coronae Borealis, located 3,000 light-years away from Earth, is set to undergo a nova outburst, a phenomenon that occurs roughly every 80 years. This “blaze star,” also known as T CrB, last exploded in 1946, and scientists predict it will happen again sometime between February and September 2024.
The Bright Future of T CrB
Bill Cooke, the lead for NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, emphasized the unpredictability of the explosion compared to a solar eclipse but assured that witnessing it will be an unforgettable experience.
“Seeing that star blow up is much rarer than a solar eclipse,” Cooke mentioned in an interview with NPR. “So, it’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”
While the star system is typically too faint to be seen with the naked eye, during the outburst, it will shine as brightly as Polaris, the North Star. This celestial event will be visible for several days, extending even longer with the use of binoculars.

The nova outburst is expected to occur near the constellation Corona Borealis, also known as the Northern Crown, situated in a small, semicircular arc near Bootes and Hercules. This is where the outburst will manifest as a “new” bright star, adding a dazzling spectacle to the night sky.
According to NASA, this recurring nova is one of only five in our galaxy, highlighting the rarity and significance of this upcoming celestial display.
