A total work of art, ode to fantasy

In addition to its finely crafted plot and the performances of its actors, Poor Creatures also captivates viewers with the richness of the universe the film manages to create. And to help him build the visual identity of this new feature, Yórgos Lánthimos (“The Favorite,” winner of the 2019 Academy Awards) had no shortage of ideas.

“We had to create a world for Bella to live in,” he explains. It couldn’t just be a realistic universe. We have therefore tried to expand the time period and insert elements that refer to a specific era and allow us to turn to the fairy tale or metaphor. In the end, various elements come together that refer to science fiction, anachronism, but also the imagination.”

Peppered with allusions to period films from the Victorian era, to the big names of the steampunk genre or even to the gorgeously monstrous cinema of Tim Burton, “Poor Creatures” manages to create as many poetic paintings as there are stages in its protagonist’s wanderings gives the longed for emancipation.

As Bella’s journey progresses, Bella’s costumes and hairstyles evolve to reflect her transformation. And to realize his craziest ideas, Yórgos Lánthimos surrounded himself with a trustworthy team led by Nadia Stacey. The latter had already been appointed head make-up artist and hair stylist for La Favorite and was more than enthusiastic about the project: “There are always people in society whose appearance does not correspond to the times. Even today you can meet someone on the street who looks like they came straight from the 70s. We wanted to find out who these people might be and whether they think differently. That’s what always makes Yorgos’ films so interesting.”

Although Bella’s dresses are inspired by the great rules of Victorian style, the young ingenuity takes pleasure in altering them to ultimately always wear them the way she wants. The result is a chic and unkempt outfit, a delicious mix of classic and modern, a true definition of style.
