The collision is believed to have occurred in the Belt region of the Fomalhaut Solar System, which contains space objects made of ice, similar to the Kuiper Belt in our Solar System.

Scientists believe Hubble discovered the object, believed to be a planet, shortly after the collision. At this point, the cloud resulting from the explosion expanded and became concentrated in a narrow area. But by 2014, the cloud of the explosion had disappeared.

“Collisions like this are very rare and so it is extraordinary that we were able to see one of them,” said Andras Gaspar, an astronomer from the University of Arizona, US, who led the study, as reported by Live Science.

In the study, Gaspar evaluated Hubble’s observation archive from the last 20 years. He found that Fomalhaut b weakened over time before finally disappearing in 2014.

Gaspar created a computer simulation to observe a collision between two icy space objects up to 200 kilometers in diameter. The results show that collisions between such large objects can create huge clouds, according to Hubble observations.

This hypothesis may also explain some of Fomalhaut b’s strange behaviors. For example, for an explanet at a distance of 25 light years from Earth, the light is very bright.

On the other hand, Fomalhaut b also has no infrared properties, suggesting that it is very cold. In fact, as a young planet that normally has a high temperature, it should emit infrared rays.
