Nearly 60 people died in a week due to freezing weather across the United States

Since January 12, authorities across the United States have reported at least 59 weather-related deaths. Authorities in the southern state of Tennessee reported 19 deaths. Nine deaths were recorded in Oregon on the West Coast, six each in Illinois in the Midwest and Mississippi in the South, five each in Washington in the Northwest and Kentucky in the South, and three people died in New York state. Louisiana reported two deaths, while Arkansas, Wisconsin, Wyoming and New Hampshire reported one each.

In Oregon, 75,000 people were without power on Saturday evening and Governor Tina Kotek declared a state of emergency. Authorities in Memphis, Tennessee, asked residents to boil their water because of frozen pipes.

Over a thousand flights across the USA were canceled due to weather, and another eight thousand were delayed, wrote the AFP agency.

After a cold weekend, the US Weather Bureau is expecting warming. The forecast shows above-average temperatures for most of the U.S. next week.
