Premier League: Everton slo Liverpool 2–0

(Everton – Liverpool 2–0) Little worked for Liverpool in Jürgen Klopp’s last Merseyside derby.

Thursday 25 April at 00:07

The short version

  • Everton beat Liverpool 2-0 in Jurgen Klopp’s last Merseyside derby
  • Liverpool dropped important points in the title race against Arsenal and Manchester City
  • Liverpool are now three points behind Arsenal in 1st place, and one point ahead of Manchester City in 3rd place – but with two more games played
  • Sky Sports expert Jamie Carragher believes this was the end of the title race for Liverpool

Sea view

– We have to look at ourselves in the mirror, we cannot accept that, says Virgil van Dijk to Viaplay after the match.

– This is the end of the title race for Liverpool. It feels like the end. Now they have to make sure to finish the season strong. Today they are not good enough in any of the boxes, says Sky Sports expert and former Liverpool stopper Jamie Carragher.

– It is not acceptable at this level, Carragher follows up.

When asked if Liverpool are still in the title race, a clearly disappointed Jürgen Klopp replies:

– Then it has to happen a lot, they (Arsenal and City) must come in a very bad period. At least it didn’t look like that with Arsenal yesterday, the Liverpool manager replied to Sky Sports.

Jarrad Branthwaite, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and a good Everton collective ensured that Liverpool dropped vital points in the title race against Arsenal and Manchester City.

“You lost the league at Goodison Park,” chanted the Everton fans after the team beat their neighbors at home for the first time since 2010 – when Tim Cahill and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta scored the goals for Everton in a 2-0 victory.

Liverpool and Arsenal were level on points before the round – with one game more played than City. But after Arsenal humiliated Chelsea on Tuesday Martin Ødegaard & co. pressure on competitors.

Jürgen Klopp’s men could not cope with that pressure.

Liverpool are now three points up on Arsenal in 1st place, and just one point down on Manchester City in 3rd place – with two more games to play.

The temperature was high right from the start, and the home team came out of the gates the best. Liverpool came more into the game later in the half and clearly had the most possession. But Everton were best in front of goal.

  • On 1–0 Liverpool screwed it up with their clearances in their own box. The ball eventually ended up in the legs of Jarrad Branthwaite, who via Allison and the bar got the ball into the goal.

Then Liverpool picked up the pace, and came up with chance after chance. Darwin Núñez played a starring role in most of the chances, but a good Everton defense and an alert Jordan Pickford at the back stopped all that came.

  • After the break, Everton added 2–0. Dominic Calvert-Lewin then had to stand all alone on the back post. The forward went sky high and thumped the ball into the goal.

– Calvert-Lewin is currently the world‘s best head player, said Jan Åge Fjørtoft in the Viaplay studio – before Calvert-Lewin’s goal.

Liverpool’s biggest chance in the second half came from Luis Díaz, but the Colombian’s finish hit the post.
