Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, whose long-term disappearance in the Russian prison system has caused great concern in democratic society, has published the first letter from a prison in the Arctic region of Siberia, claiming that everything is fine with him and thanking him also for the support.
The opposition figure also explained the details of the transfer to the special regime colony, which lasted 20 days and was “strenuous.”
“I was brought on Saturday (December 23) evening. But I was taken with so much caution and on such a strange route (Vladimir – Moscow – Chelyabinsk – Yekaterinburg – Kirov – Vorkut – Harpa) that I didn’t even think about it. “Until mid-January, everyone could find me here,” writes Navalny.
“That’s why I was very surprised when the door to my cell was opened yesterday with the words: ‘You have a lawyer,’” admits the opposition figure.
“In general, don’t worry about me. I’m doing well. I’m terribly glad that I finally got through it. Thank you again to everyone for your support,” Navalny wrote.
Opposition press secretary Kira Yarmish said on Monday that Navalny had been moved to a prison in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Region.
Since December 6, Navalny’s lawyers have been banned from meeting with him. Navalny’s team found that he was transferred from a prison near Moscow to another prison on December 11, but where exactly was not known.
Navalny was arrested in January 2021 while returning from Germany, where he was being treated following a poisoning attempt organized by agents of Russia’s domestic intelligence service (FSB).
In February of that year, Navalny was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for allegedly violating the terms of the suspended sentence he was sentenced to in 2014 during his treatment in Germany. In March of the following year he was sentenced to a further nine years in prison for “fraud” and “contempt of court”, and in August 2023 to 19 years in prison for “extremism”.
