The key witness in the Marengo trial, Nabil B., apparently discussed the kidnapping and torture of other criminals when he struck a deal with prosecutors. This can be inferred from new information in the hands of the AD and One today.

This information comes from encrypted messages that B. sent from prison via a smuggled phone. These were added to the criminal record last week. When he sent the messages, B. was negotiating to take on the role of key witness.

Nabil B. is held responsible for involvement in two murders and three murder plans. At the beginning of 2017, Hakim Changachi, a member of a notorious crime family, was liquidated in Utrecht. It quickly became clear that the murder was a mistake: someone else should have been the victim.

The Changachi family found out that B. had something to do with the murder and confronted him on the street. It became too hot under B’s feet, so he went to the police. There he was offered a reduced sentence in exchange for crucial information in the case: B. became a key witness.

Phone smuggled in

While in prison, he had a PGP phone smuggled in, which he could use to communicate encrypted with his former criminal friends. He remained silent about it during the trial, but later admitted it during interrogation.

Now that the messages have been decrypted by the NFI, it appears that B. has been communicating with Saïd R., the right-hand man of Ridouan Taghi, the main suspect in the Marengo trial. R’s brother narrowly survived an assassination attempt this month.

“Have you made any progress, brother, with your research?” Nabil B. asked Saïd R over the PGP phone. “Do you agree that the focus is on these Changachi sons of bitches?”, referring to members of the crime family who, according to B., have become “bloodthirsty.”

“It is better to accuse and torture people”

R. says he is busy trying to find out who tried to kill his brother. “We are not ruling out where it could come from. I need to have at least some evidence before I start anything.”

“Then it will be difficult, brother,” B. then replies. “Then I hope, inshallah (God willing, editor’s note), that you achieve results quickly. Because that is stress, better than burdening and torturing people.”

These messages were sent when B. had signed a preliminary agreement with the public prosecutor’s office. Seven days later, he would make the final deal that would officially make him a key witness.

B’s lawyer doesn’t want to answer.

Who is who in the very extensive Marengo process? Check it out in this special.

The Marengo trial against seventeen suspects has been running since 2018. They are suspected of involvement in several liquidations and murder plots. Life imprisonment was demanded against 46-year-old Ridouan Taghi and five other people.

Last month, Taghi’s lawyers decided to drop the defense, just six months after they began work. Among other things, they felt that they had not been given enough time to deal with the matter after taking over the case from lawyer Inez Weski

Taghi has indicated that he does not want new lawyers and the court has decided that the hearing dates will not be postponed. The criminal proceedings will conclude on February 14th. The verdict will be announced on February 27th.
