Footage of migrants on the banks of the Rio Grande in the immediate vicinity of a press conference by Republican politicians published Fox News reporter Bill Melugin. “Some shouted ‘help’, others asked where they could pass. “They were blocked by Texas barbed wire,” he captioned the videos, saying they were a group of migrants from Venezuela.

The number of arrivals is record-breaking
Republican congressmen led by Johnson traveled to Texas after Fox News, citing US border patrol officials, announced that 302,000 attempts to cross the border illegally were recorded in December – the highest recorded number in US history.
The Republicans blame the government of President Joe Biden for the current situation and, among other things, are blocking the current package worth $110.5 million (almost CZK 2.5 billion) in Congress, more than half of which is earmarked for Ukraine and also includes aid to Israel – they intend to agree to this only if Democrats toughen anti-immigration measures.

“The situation here and across the country is truly shocking. “It’s heartbreaking and outrageous at the same time,” Johnson said during a news conference on the banks of the Rio Grande. He added that the US was now “at a tipping point” and blamed the Biden administration for its inaction while disregarding tougher anti-immigration measures from Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. The Democrats, on the other hand, accuse the Republican leadership of Texas, among other things, of violating the constitution and endangering human life and nature.

At the same time, the intensity of legal battles between Democrats and Republicans is increasing as this year’s presidential election approaches. On Tuesday, for example, the Biden administration asked the Supreme Court to allow federal border patrol agents to cut or move barbed wire barriers erected by the state of Texas, NBC News reported. There is also dispute over a floating barrier in the Rio Grande that a federal judge in Texas ordered Abbott to remove in December, according to the Justice Department.
