Microsoft warns companies about email attacks

(MENAFN- Al-Anbaa) Microsoft said it has begun warning organizations that they are targets of the same Russian-sponsored group that hacked their executives’ emails late last year.
According to a blog post from the software maker on Thursday, the hackers – a group called Midnight Blizzard or Cozy Bear – were identified by Microsoft’s Threat Intelligence team as the same team that is targeting other organizations. As part of our normal notification processes, we have begun… Notify these target organizations.
This revelation is the latest sign that the group’s recent activities extend beyond Microsoft. Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. on Wednesday reported a breach in its cloud email system believed to have been caused by Midnight Blizzard.
Last week, Microsoft announced that the group hacked into an old, non-production tenant account and used it as a base to access a small number of email accounts, including those of executives and employees working in cybersecurity and law. Microsoft said the hackers initially targeted the emails to obtain information about Midnight Blizzard itself.
Microsoft added that a subsequent investigation revealed that the original email account did not have multi-factor authentication, a common security measure.
HPE, an IT vendor, said it was informed on Dec. 12 that a government hacking group had infiltrated its email systems. Investigators believe that starting in May, hackers accessed data through a small percentage of HPE mailboxes belonging to employees working in cybersecurity and other areas.
The US government linked the hacking group, also known as Nobelium, to Russia. The same group previously hacked SolarWinds Corp as part of a massive electronic espionage campaign against multiple federal agencies.
