Members of the European Parliament (EP) agreed on Thursday that the current Hungarian government of Viktor Orbán threatens the values, institutions and financial interests of the European Union. According to the decision they adopted, Hungary should not receive any further funding from the EU until it can prove that it has reliably addressed deficiencies in the areas of the rule of law and human rights. Today, 345 MPs supported the resolution, 104 were against and 29 abstained.
The European Parliament is also questioning the decision of the European Commission, which paid Budapest ten billion euros (around 252 billion crowns) from EU funds last December, a day before Orbán was the only one at the summit of member states to block the proposal to increase the EU -Budget for the period 2024 to 2027 and release of another 50 billion euros (around 1.2 trillion crowns) for Ukraine, which is attacked by Russia.
Orbán explains that Budapest is ready to support Kiev with its own resources, but refuses to use the EU budget. Balázs Hidvéghi, MEP from Orbán’s ruling party Fidesz, accused the EP of “dictatorial practices” and “ideological blackmail” during the debate on the resolution on Wednesday.
In the resolution, MEPs call on member states to start a process that could ultimately strip Hungary of its voting rights if they conclude that Budapest is violating the European Union’s founding treaties.
Representatives of almost all EP political groups spoke in the debate on Wednesday about Orbán’s blackmail of the EU – in their opinion, the Hungarian government is abusing its veto in the European Council to get billions of euros from European funds that, in their opinion, it is not entitled to controversial reforms to the judiciary, media access, academia and other measures.
