44-year-old Behring-Breivik, who changed his name to Fjotolf Hansen in 2017, carried out two bloody attacks on July 22, 2011. First, he detonated a mine near a government building in Oslo, killing eight people. Then, disguised as a police officer, he massacred 69 people at a summer camp run by the Workers’ Party’s youth organization on the island of Utøya.
It is the worst crime committed in Norway since World War II. In 2012, the court sentenced Behring-Breivik to 21 years in prison, which can be extended if he is still considered dangerous after this sentence.
Behring-Breivik believes that the twelve years he spent behind bars in isolation from others is sufficient punishment and that he should be allowed to communicate with other prisoners. His lawyer claimed that Behring-Breivik’s health had suffered as a result of his solitary confinement, that he had suicidal thoughts and was taking antidepressants.
Many would find Behring-Breivik’s prison conditions quite comfortable. He has three combined cells at his disposal, the total area of which is 30 square meters. He has the ability to play video games and watch television shows. Behring-Breivik has two televisions available for this purpose.
Although he also owns a computer, it does not have access to the Internet.
Behring-Breivik is also equipped with exercise equipment, newspapers and books.
