Landmark Agreement: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Seattle Children’s Hospital Resolve Transgender Care Dispute

Texas Attorney General‌ Reaches Settlement with Seattle Children’s Hospital

HOUSTON, Texas — Texas Attorney‍ General Ken Paxton has recently finalized a settlement with a children’s hospital located in Washington State. This agreement comes after Paxton’s demand for information regarding Texas⁢ patients ‌receiving gender-affirming care, which is now prohibited in ⁢Texas.

Details of the ⁤Settlement

The⁣ attorney general’s office, along with Seattle Children’s Hospital, jointly announced ⁢the court‍ settlement on Monday. As part of the settlement, Paxton has agreed to withdraw his request for information about transgender patients from Texas, while the hospital ⁤has decided to surrender its business license in the state.

Furthermore, officials from the hospital confirmed under⁣ oath that they do not have any staff members providing treatment to transgender children from Texas, either in person or remotely.

Implications of the State Law

Following a state⁤ law implemented last September, gender-affirming care for transgender youth, including treatments like puberty ⁢blockers, hormone therapy, and surgery, has been prohibited. In response to the settlement with Seattle Children’s Hospital, Paxton issued a statement emphasizing the importance of upholding Texas laws⁢ in⁣ medical practices.

“Seattle Children’s Hospital seemed to violate Texas law⁤ and initially attempted to avoid accountability during⁤ the⁤ investigation. By choosing to exit the State ⁢of Texas and forego business opportunities here, they have made it clear that medical providers in Texas must adhere to our laws. We are committed to safeguarding children from potentially harmful ‘gender transition’ treatments ⁢that could have⁣ lasting negative effects.”

Support for Gender-Affirming Care

Contrary to Paxton’s stance,‍ The American Academy of Pediatrics and other prominent medical organizations advocate for providing transgender adolescents with access to gender-affirming health‌ care. Meanwhile, Paxton’s office⁤ is embroiled in a legal dispute over the state’s authority to initiate ‍child abuse investigations against parents who ‌have facilitated such care ⁢for their children.
