More than 75 thousand cases of malaria were registered in the municipality of Cazenga, from January to March this year, informed the municipal director of Health, Caetano Miguel.

In the same period, in 2023, the municipality recorded close to 80 thousand cases of malaria, according to the director, who spoke on Friday, at the launch of the municipal campaign to combat malaria.

He said that pregnant women and children under 5 years of age are the most affected, adding that to combat the disease, the main measures include the elimination of mosquito breeding sites, through environmental sanitation actions, the use of mosquito nets and insecticides.

He informed that the Cazenga Health department has distributed mosquito nets and carried out intra and extra-household fumigation actions, as well as awareness-raising lectures in the communities.

The most affected urban districts are Kalawenda, Hoji-ya-Henda, Cazenga Popular and Tala Hady.

The municipality of Cazenga has an estimated population of two million inhabitants and 15 public health units, including one general hospital, two municipal hospitals, five health centers and three health posts.

On Thursday, an Israeli air strike targeted a fuel truck near Baalbek, eastern Lebanon, in an area far from the border, wounding one person.

A source close to Hezbollah told Agence France-Presse that “a drone targeted a truck transporting fuel” in the Dorris area, at the entrance to the city of Baalbek, adding that the truck driver was injured.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported, “An enemy drone strike targeted a fuel truck in the plain of the town of Dorris, wounding the driver and causing damage to the truck and tanker,” adding that “the missile fell into a dirt berm next to the road.”

This raid comes amid increasing escalation between Hezbollah and Israel in recent days.

On Wednesday, the Israeli army announced the launch of “offensive operations” in southern Lebanon, confirming that it had struck 40 Hezbollah targets and “eliminated” about half of its leaders in the south of the country.

The party has intensified its targeting of military sites since last week amid tension between Israel and its supporter Tehran, against the backdrop of the targeting of the Iranian consulate in Damascus in early April.

Mutual bombing operations have been taking place on an almost daily basis between Hezbollah and Israel across the border since the day following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.

The Israeli army is bombing more targets deep inside Lebanon and targeting Hezbollah leaders.

Since the start of the escalation, at least 380 people have been killed in Lebanon, including 252 Hezbollah members and 72 civilians, according to a tally prepared by Agence France-Presse based on party statements and official Lebanese sources.

On the other hand, the Israeli side counted the deaths of 11 soldiers and 8 civilians.
