New Delhi – Kannur University in Supreme Court that appointment of Priya Varghese does not violate UGC rules. Kannur University filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court opposing the arguments of the UGC.
The university chancellor stated in the affidavit that the criteria laid down by the UGC for the appointment of associate professors were followed. The university has made this clear in its response to the petitions filed against the Supreme Court verdict confirming the appointment of Priya Varghese. The Supreme Court will hear the case on Monday.
The division bench had set aside the Supreme Court’s single verdict that Priya Varghese did not have the requisite teaching experience to be appointed as an associate professor in Kannur University. The court held that the time he spent conducting research under Kannur University’s faculty development program, the time he served as the university’s director of student services and NSS coordinator, and the time he was a lecturer at Teacher was Kannur University Education Center on contract basis, after obtaining NET qualification, the period from June 5, 2002 to February 28, 2003 can be considered as teaching activity.
