Israeli ministers shouted at the army chief. But it wasn’t about waging war

A few days ago, a series of videos appeared on social networks in which Israeli army soldiers called for the return of settlers to the Gaza Strip.

The settlements were evacuated by the Jewish state in the summer of 2005, when Ariel Sharon’s government decided that protecting illegal settlements in an area of two million Palestinians was too demanding for it and that it needed to focus more on the (also) occupied West Bank.

The Israeli Security Cabinet meeting on Thursday showed that the disengagement from Gaza is still a hot topic even for some government politicians.

According to the Walla News server, several ministers immediately began shouting at Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi because politicians who supported the withdrawal from Gaza years ago will sit on the army commission investigating the circumstances of the October 7 Hamas attack .

One of the critics is former Defense Minister Šaul Mofaz, who harassed extremist Finance Minister Becalel Smotrič and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir. In recent days, its proposals to forcibly relocate Gazans to other countries have been criticized by representatives of the United States and the European Union.

But others also joined them – for example the Minister of Transport Miri Regevová or the head of the Department for Regional Cooperation David Amsalem. According to an unnamed government member who spoke to KAN television, the ministers’ screams could be heard outside the hall.

Defense Minister Joav Gallant, on the other hand, defended the attacked Israeli army chief and the opposition leader Benny Ganc, who only joined the government in response to the Hamas terrorist attack.

“This is a professional investigation, what the hell does this have to do with the withdrawal (from Gaza)?” The chief (of the General Staff) is conducting an investigation into what happened, the purposes of the war and our ability to respond to prepare for the conflict in the north. “This is not a national investigation,” he shouted to his colleagues.

Another minister described the meeting as a “disgusting discussion” and condemned the attacks on the army. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu eventually ended the meeting early, telling Halevi that “sometimes you have to listen to ministers.”
