70% of unfilled medical schools nationwide are local universities… “Top 5” has 0 people who left

/Photo provided by Jongno Academy: In this year’s college admissions recruitment, the number of vacancies increased compared to last year due to the impact of the decline in the school-age population, but it was found that most medical schools across the country, where The phenomenon of “overcrowding” is getting worse, all seats are occupied. However, it is estimated that the number of unfilled local medical schools has more than doubled. According to the statistical data on “nationwide regular recruitment of students in the field of medicine and pharmacy” released by Jongro Academy on the 5th, 25 of the 39 medical schools across the country did not have a single vacancy in regular admissions. However, in the remaining 14 medical schools, most of which are local universities, 33 students have not enrolled, increasing the number of vacancies by 20 compared to last year.

In Seoul, there were a total of 9 unfilled positions, including 8 at Korea University and 1 at Hanyang University, but local medical schools saw a total of 24 students abandon their registrations, more than twice as many as last year (13). This means that while students are flocking to medical schools, they are still flocking to more popular universities. In fact, there is not a single student left at Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Sungkyunkwan University, Catholic University of Korea and Ulsan University, which are considered the top five medical schools in Korea.

The number of transfers to medical schools tends to decrease: 213 students in 2019, 162 students in 2020, 157 students in 2021, 63 students in 2022 and 13 students in 2023, but this year (33 students) increased slightly. There is analysis within and outside the college admissions industry that this is only temporary. This is because the number of cases of multiple admissions may have increased due to an increase in the number of applications from test takers to medical schools under the rolling admissions process, which allows applications to be submitted to up to six universities.

In the case of dental school, 21 people dropped out of 11 universities across the country. There are 8 each from Pusan National University and Dankook University (Cheonan), 2 from Seoul National University and 1 each from Chosun and Yonsei University in Gyeongbuk. Among the 12 universities of the College of Oriental Medicine, there were a total of 8 vacant positions, including 6 at Gachon University (Global) and 2 at Daegu College of Oriental Medicine. Veterinary schools (10 schools) were unable to meet their quota of 6 students and pharmacy schools (37 schools) were unable to meet their quota of 29 students. As a result, a total of 97 cases of rollovers occurred in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors, including at 109 medical schools across the country.

Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongno Academy, said: “Based on the rolling admission results for 2024, the preference for the field of medicine and pharmaceutical sciences still seems to be very strong. Since there were multiple admissions due to overlapping applications between medical professionals.” At the schools, there was a phenomenon of switching between medical faculties, dental faculties, schools of oriental medicine and pharmacy schools, and there was a regular change in the number of admissions.” “The The number of people has increased slightly,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the number of unfilled applicants for regular admissions at 221 universities across the country stands at 37,332, according to Jongno Academy. This represents approximately 14.0% of the number of people selected for regular recruitment, an increase of 886 people compared to the previous year (36,446 people). In particular, the number of schools with a vacancy rate of 60% or more was 15, almost doubling compared to the previous year (8 schools). Except for four universities, the remaining universities were from non-urban areas.
