Anyone who would like to continue their career at the BMW factory in Debrecen can currently choose from dozens of job opportunities. We found 82 open positions on the BMW Manufacturing Kft. job search platform, 77 of which are in Debrecen. The most recent positions were advertised in the areas of maintenance (production employee), continuous development (quality improvement specialist, material analysis specialist) and assembly (production control coordinator).
An unprecedented competition
With the BMW investment in Debrecen, all three German premium car manufacturers are now committed to Hungary. Previously, Audi Hungaria was founded in Győr in 1993, while the history of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét has been written since 2008. We took a look at the BMW Group’s current employment opportunities in Hungary after Debrecen Mayor László Papp said at an open day for automotive industry students in November last year: The basis of economic development is education, placement of competitive knowledge to young people, in which BMW’s appearance in the city marked a change in time. Due to industrial development, vocational training in Debrecen has become more important: in 2015, 7,500 students studied in the city’s vocational training institutions, and since then there have been more than 12,000.
50-100 new employees per month
According to the agreement concluded with the BMW factory in Debrecen, 100 students will be able to start studying at the company’s new training center from September, and the number will increase by another 100 every year. Johannes Trauth, Vice President of BMW Group Gyár Debrecen, said that in addition to training new and existing employees, their new training center will also be used as a kind of recruiting office. At that time, he reported that more than 3,000 people were already working on the construction of the factory, a new service center would be handed over after the training center and the first car would roll off the assembly line in Debrecen within a year. Johannes Trauth stated that 50 to 100 new employees join the workforce in Debrecen every month.
How dynamic recruitment is is shown by the fact that in January last year we were only able to report that more than 100 employees were on board, while in the first half of last year almost 400 employees were looking for 70 vacancies. Preliminary plans called for the plant to start production with the Neue Klassé in 2025. However, it has now been decided – in November 2022 – that BMW will also build a battery assembly plant in Debrecen in addition to the car factory, so the total value of the investment is expected to be HUF 800 billion instead of HUF 400 billion. However, it is questionable to what extent the hyperinflationary environment is changing costs.
You should also watch out for the Chinese in Kecskemét
As for competitors, we also looked at Mercedes-Benz’s current job vacancies. If we click on the “Physical jobs” tab, we see that there are currently no offers, but in terms of “intellectual and production-related jobs”, Kecskemét is the city of opportunities. There are now 25 positions open, six of which are temporary, and there are also internship opportunities.
A look at the current job advertisements shows that we are looking for: an electrical maintenance technician in the areas of surface treatment and body work.
Let’s be honest, the appearance of the Chinese car manufacturer BYD in Szeged could pose a serious challenge in the southern plain, because in the “hunting areas” of the two brands one can speak of overlaps. The Stuttgart-based automobile company is hardly afraid of some competition. CEO Ola Källenius has just announced in the Index columns that Mercedes-Benz will invest several billion euros in its Kecskemét plant, giving the Hungarian location a leading role in the electric transition. He explained to our newspaper that with the change in the ratio of the drive chains, a battery assembly plant will be created on the factory premises and in the near future it will also be possible to serve buyers of Mercedes-Benz luxury cars from Kecskemét.
Twelve thousand in Győr already know it
