Iberdrola has started commissioning the “Vineyard Wind I” offshore wind farm, the first large-scale project of this technology in the United States 806 megawatts (MW) power, as the company announced on Thursday.

Specific, The plant has already begun providing Massachusetts with green energy. The company highlighted that this state will provide wind power to more than 400,000 homes, which is more than half of a city like Boston or the entire island of Mallorca.

The project, which will see five turbines running at full capacity in the first phases of the year, is guaranteed an investment of $3 billion (more than 2,700 million euros at current exchange rates) through contracts with the three largest electricity companies in the year the State. .

The park began construction in 2021 and will be fully operational this year, avoiding the emission of more than 1.6 million tons of CO2 per year, the equivalent of a distance 325,000 vehicles off the road.

Each of the turbines, whose transition pieces were manufactured by the Asturian company Windar Renovables, will provide energy to more than 6,000 homes and businesses.

They consist of a tower, three rotor blades and a nacelle and have a rated output of 13 megawatts (MW), “making them the largest turbine in the Western world,” said Iberdrola, who added that with a single rotation this turbine can house a house Power Massachusetts for a full day.

“We are delivering the first clean offshore wind energy to the Massachusetts grid. We are at a pivotal moment for climate action in the United States and we are witnessing a new beginning for the country’s offshore wind industry. As the capacity of this historic project comes online, we will continue to support all the partners who made this success possible,” emphasized Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid, Iberdrola’s US subsidiary.

Avangrid and the Danish investment group Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), co-owner of the project, announced last October that Vineyard Wind 1 had completed a tax capital package worth $1.2 billion (around €1.135 million), the first of its kind for Commercial-scale offshore wind energy with three banks based in the United States.

The Spanish company Windar Renovables was responsible for manufacturing the 62 foundations of the wind turbines. The contract for an amount of almost 100 million euros meant the creation of almost 400 jobs in the branches in Asturias.

For its part, the Italian Prysmian Group was responsible for the implementation of the submarine cable system that connects the offshore wind farm to the continental power grid of the United States. In total, more than 134 kilometers of high-voltage AC electrical cables were required.

The American company Southwire was responsible for the designthe manufacture and installation of more than 51 kilometers of terrestrial high-voltage cable.

In July 2023, installation of the marine substation that will power the entire Vineyard Wind I project was completed. It is the first substation of this type that Iberdrola has installed in the United States and the sixth in the world, weighing more than 5,000 tons, making it the largest that the company has installed in its history.
