The Taiwan Smart Operation Tower was a construction project promoted by Hu Zhiqiang when he was the former mayor of Taichung before the merger. After an international competition, it was to become the tallest landmark in Taiwan. After the merger, the Taiwan Tower had to overcome many construction problems during Hu Zhiqiang’s tenure. In the end, Lin Jialong was unable to lay the foundation after taking office, and assumed that the original budget of 8 billion would be greatly increased to 16 billion, so he changed the plan for a Smart Operation Center. It also took part in an international competition, but in the end construction did not begin. Lin Jialong was defeated and resigned.
After taking office, Lu Xiuyan renamed the project “Taiwan Smart Operation Tower” and also traveled to Europe for inspections in the first year after taking office. However, when her first term was about to expire, she decided to change the project to “BOT” and also planned to move towards the “Taichung 101” development direction.
From the original landmark building to the intelligent operation building to the Taichung 101 building that Lu Xiuyan wants to build, when the city government applied for BOT investment, the commercial uses that could be exploited in the original project were too few. “Nan Economic and Trade Park (Draft) Comprehensive Review Public Exhibition Briefing”, it can be seen that the location of the Taiwan Smart Tower will be changed.
In this context, the Municipal Development Office explained that the current change of address is a draft and still needs to be decided by the mayor. This comprehensive examination should prepare for the change of location. The second innovative R&D site, which was originally located next to Taiwan, is used as the Smart Operation Tower. , has been converted into the “Third Type Innovation R&D Special Zone” with an area of 3.18 hectares, and the volume will be adjusted from the current 200% to 630%. In the future, the “Taiwan Smart Operation Tower” can be fully used to promote investment, and in the future, the country will also add hotels, leisure services, finance and insurance and other industries to improve its composite usage functions.
Under these circumstances, the originally planned location for Hu Zhiqiang’s Taiwan Tower will also be returned to the park. Hu Zhiqiang once built a building module of the Taiwan Tower here. However, the site has been surrounded by iron sheets for many years, and the iron sheets have become rusty. The Metropolitan Development Bureau stated that it should be demolished in the future, but the timing has not yet been determined.
