Some notes on dietary supplements

Food supplements are products intended to supplement the normal diet (which is not necessary in France except in pathological cases and in the case of vegetarian or vegan diets) and consist of a concentrate of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect. They can be used to correct a deficiency, to maintain adequate intake of certain nutrients (e.g. vitamin B12 as part of a vegetarian or vegan diet), or to support physiological function.

Since the 1980s, interest in these substances has grown exponentially, so that today nine out of ten people have taken dietary supplements in their lives, including vitamin C, D and magnesium. In the world of sports, the most commonly consumed supplement appears to be creatine, according to marketing data. Dietary supplement manufacturers have responsibilities: provide the name of the nutrients, recommend the correct dosage, and warn about the effects of possible abuse. However, many studies report irregularities in dosage, which is a cause for concern.

Which dietary supplements are at risk?

What is the future of the dietary supplement industry?

It seems difficult to imagine a lasting future for the dietary supplement industry without overhauling its operations and commitments. First of all, it is repeatedly pointed out that manufacturers should clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of their products in specific indications instead of relying on risky marketing claims that are usually not supported by properly conducted clinical studies. There is a major lack of serious clinical trials on these products and this should be addressed.

On the other hand, the authors recall that to avoid hepatotoxicity, manufacturers of dietary supplements should pay more attention to the quality of their manufacturing process in order to avoid overdosing of the compounds or their contamination by toxic substances and be exemplary in identifying cases of harmful effects caused by their substances are caused. Without these measures, dietary supplements will continue to be what they are: substances whose effectiveness and safety are uncertain.
