The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition warns citizens about the presence of a bacteria in a cheese marketed in Spain. According to them, the presence of the STEC bacteria or “Escherichia coli”, which produces Shiga toxin, was detected in an aged cheese of French origin. This means it is not suitable for consumption. Therefore it should be withdrawn from the market. If you have it at home, you should not consume it.

As part of its self-control measures, the production company itself detected the presence of pathogenic bacteria and reported the incident to the responsible authorities.

It was on Wednesday December 13th when FrieslandCampina was informed of a case of possible presence of “Escherichia coli” bacteria in the PDO Morbier cheese produced by the French company Route Des Terroirs and which FrieslandCampina uses as raw material for some Products he sells used on the Spanish market.

The French authorities have informed the rest of European countries through the European Food Alert Network (RASFF) about the presence of cheese unfit for consumption. Thanks to the European Alert Information System and the SCIRI network in Spain, this information has been brought to the attention of the health authorities of the various autonomous communities, who are verifying whether this cheese has been withdrawn from the market.

Characteristics of contaminated cheese:

The cheese contaminated with Escherichia coli and withdrawn from sale is a well-known French cheese that is easily identified by the dark line of ash that divides its dough in half. It is usually sold commercially in wedges.

MORBIER DOP Matured cheese made from raw milk.

This product is sold under the brands Frieslandcampina IBERIA and Millán Vicente.

The warning affects all batches of the 175 and 195 g pieces of this cheese.

What dangers does it pose?

These toxins manifest themselves in symptoms such as severe abdominal cramps, which can lead to watery, bloody diarrhea. It can also cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure.

After being informed of the situation, the company FrieslandCampina states that it has ordered its dealers and customers to withdraw the affected batches (all with a best-before date between August 12th, 2023 and October 1st, 2024, both included) as a precautionary measure. “The aim of this measure is to ensure the safety of consumers at all times. “At the same time, the companies that sell these products act very proactively and inform the customer directly at the point of sale,” says the company.

FrieslandCampina would like to convey a message of reassurance as the appropriate measures have been taken. “Consumption of any of the affected batches may cause general digestive discomfort and occasionally fever,” he added.
