New Delhi: AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi has criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for shooting dead four people in Manipur. Priyanka demanded that all allies in the northeastern states should take immediate measures for stability and peace.
Priyanka pointed out that a joint delegation of political leaders from Manipur had sought time to meet the Prime Minister in Delhi but the central government refused. Priyanka said that Narendra Modi has not visited Manipur yet and has not spoken about Manipur.
Priyanka accused Modi of being unwilling to answer the questions of the opposition leaders in Parliament and that Modi has so far not taken any measures to resolve the conflicts in the state.
Priyanka asked whether there should be this kind of leadership in Manipur or whether those in power should want advertisements glorifying the current leadership.
“In Manipur, four people were shot dead and many were injured.” A curfew was imposed in many districts. The people of Manipur have been facing killings, violence and other casualties for almost eight months. “When will this trend end,” wrote Priyanka Gandhi on X.
Tensions are surging again in the state ahead of the Congress’ second Bharat Nyaya Yatra, scheduled to begin in Manipur on January 14.
The violence occurred in Lilong, a Muslim-majority Meiti area in Manipur’s Thoubal district. It is reported that four people were killed on the spot. In addition, five people were injured, the report said. Meanwhile, media reported that there were also shots at security forces in Moray.
The attackers have not yet been identified. According to a PTI report, the gun-toting attackers opened fire on the residents. PTI also reported that the attackers’ vehicle was burnt by the locals.
Following the attack, a curfew was imposed in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts. In the event of minor conflicts, concessions were previously granted in these areas. Essential sectors such as healthcare and news media have been exempted from the curfew.
