Kasaragod: The child’s birth certificate helped NIA officials nab Sawad, the first accused in the teacher’s beheading case. Although the name given at the time of marriage in Kasarkot was Shah Jahan, it was the real name given in the birth certificate of the eldest child. The father’s name was recorded as MM Savad in the birth certificate issued by Mangalpadi Panchayat.

Savad, who had been on the run for 13 years, was arrested by the NIA from Kannur’s Mattannur on Wednesday morning. Sawad was arrested while working as a carpenter and hiding in Mattanur under the name Shah Jahan. After the NIA received a tip-off, the house was surrounded and arrests were made. The suspect has been taken to the NIA headquarters in Kochi and is being interrogated in detail. On July 4, 2010, Professor TJ Joseph, a Malayalam teacher at Thodupuzha Newman’s College, underwent an amputation. After the incident, Sawad fled with weapons, including an ax which he used to chop his hand.

The NIA found that Sawad’s hidden life was under the protection of Popular Front workers. The NIA’s move is to conduct a detailed investigation into who helped Savad stay in hiding for 13 years and where Savad was in Kanamarayat. There needs to be clarity as to when Sawad, who was said to have been abroad, came to Kerala.
