The residue limit of the pesticide chlorpyrifos was exceeded six times. This is what it says in a three-day-old report from the Czech Agricultural and Food Inspection Service (SZPI), which “seized” flour imported from Ukraine. It was the company ALTIN JM GROUP sro and the sample was taken last November. The supervisory authority states on its website that the amount was 24,000 kg. Farmers from the Visegrad Four countries have long been warning about Ukrainian products.

Description: Flour

The import of grain and its products from Ukraine to the Czech Republic is a frequent point of contention between our farmers and the government or its officials.

“There is no reason for the Czech Republic to ban the import of these products, as Poland, Slovakia and other countries have done,” he explained, for example, in the spring of last year Czech television the then Minister of Agriculture Zdeněk Nekula (KDU-ČSL) and referred to tests that had not found any defects in imported grain and related products.

“The import of Ukrainian grain into the EU still has a very negative impact on Czech farmers and can significantly affect smaller farmers,” the server commented on the situation in the fall Zemědělec.cz.

Probably on the same basis, after easing EU-wide restrictions, some EU countries banned the import of Ukrainian grain out of concern for the fate of local grain farmers. But the Czech Republic was not among them.

However, the import of grain and grain products and its impact on local farmers’ sales is not the only problem. From a consumer perspective, the quality of the imported range appears to be far more important.

The inspection “nestled” last year

This is often questioned, especially with reference to the high levels of banned substances in Ukrainian goods.

The latest findings from the State Agricultural and Food Inspection (SZPI), which it has published on its server, are unlikely to ease the situation PotravinyNaPranýři.cz and it was about imported Ukrainian flour.

That was the full description of the examined sample, taken in autumn 2023 from the Ukrainian grain importer ALTIN JM GROUP sro, Myslivecká 2370, Rychvald 735 32, and published this week.

And the find? Alarming!

“The maximum residue limit of the pesticide chlorpyrifos was exceeded almost six times in food.”

And what kind of material is it?

It is an organophosphate insecticide that is toxic and remains in soil, water, wood, etc. for weeks.

Its influence on humans is certainly not negligible, which is why it was banned in the past. It disrupts the functioning of hormones in the human body, causing sleep problems, memory problems, disorientation, headaches or even speech problems.

But it is also dangerous for human health, as he writes, for example: Czech radio.

In acute poisoning, it blocks the function of a key enzyme necessary for the proper functioning of acetylcholine – one of the so-called neurotransmitters in our nervous system.

It is precisely for this reason that similar chemical substances from the group of organophosphates were further developed into chemical weapons, for example nerve-paralyzing substances called sarin, soman, tabun or VX.

The researchers found that in children, exposure to chlorpyrifos during development in the womb may be linked to their intellect, memory and other psychological abilities. In the group of children more exposed to chlorpyrifos, the study revealed visible changes on the surface of the brain, with abnormal enlargement of some areas and reduction in others.

Let’s add this back in December last year Chamber of Agriculture websiteAt their meeting, the organizations of farmers in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia agreed on the need to resolve the import of agricultural raw materials from Ukraine, despite the European Commission’s original intention to allow Ukraine to do so Facilitate exports to traditional customers ending up on the European market.

They therefore called on their national governments to act together and defend the interests of farmers and food producers in Brussels. The communique was signed by representatives of the Slovak Chamber of Agriculture and Food, the Polish Krajowa Rada Izb Rolniczych and the Hungarian Nemzeti Agrárgazdasági Kamara.
