The Slovak opposition, led by Progresivní Slovenské, continues to raise the alarm and draw attention to the fact that Fico, as prime minister, is trying to abolish the special prosecutor’s office, which, in addition to his coalition colleagues, also investigated cases related to people close to Robert Fico. And four-time Slovak Prime Minister Fico launched a counterattack. He released a video in which he emphasized that he and his government are solving the real problems of Slovaks. Especially high food prices. And he described what he plans to do in this direction. He highlighted the situation in the Czech Republic.

Description: Robert Fico

The four-time Slovak Prime Minister is at the head of the coalition of Smer, Hlas and the Slovak National Party, with which he has only been in power for a few months, but he is giving full throttle and trying to push through one change after the other. In addition to efforts to abolish the special prosecutor’s office, he announced that he would work to reduce food prices in cooperation with Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenicky and Minister of Economy and Rural Affairs Richard Takač.

In a video circulating on the social network Facebook, he emphasized that he sees the fight against high food prices as a political priority of his government, which is also anchored in the government’s program statement. “The year 2024 must be structured in the spirit of our activities so that food prices in Slovakia do not become high.” He did not want to specify how much food should be cheaper, but one thing must be clear, said Fico. “So that in Slovakia, where wages and pensions are lower, we don’t have higher food prices than in neighboring countries.” For us, the Czech Republic could be a kind of goal that we want to achieve,” Fico gives an example.

He was angry because the development of inflation in Slovakia is not looking good. And from his point of view, the Slovaks need to be helped even more. “Comparing the years 2022 and 2023, inflation in Slovakia was 10.7 percent, and for food it was even 22 percent. And if we compare it with the Czech Republic, there it was only 17 percent, so the difference is clearly visible here. “In the Czech Republic they have higher incomes and lower inflation, while here we have lower incomes and higher inflation,” Fico said.

And what is with this?

According to him, the main instrument should be the price law, in which Smér even participated as an opposition party, and which allows the government to see at what purchase prices goods were brought to retail chains and for how much money the goods were then sold directly on the shelves. To put it simply and briefly, you have to look at how much the manufacturers deliver their products to the chains and how much the chains then sell them to the end customers, i.e. the Slovaks.

“Of course we may encounter a high trading markup somewhere, but the truth is that we need to monitor whether the chain stores have made reasonable profits.” If the profits are reasonable, we will probably have to accept a higher trading markup. “But if it turns out that these profits are disproportionate, then it depends on you what regulatory measures you take, because the price law gives the Ministry of Finance various options,” Fico addressed his colleagues.

Then the Slovak Finance Minister Kamenický spoke and emphasized that the Czech Republic is doing much better in some respects under the leadership of the ruling Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS). “For example, Eidam is 61 percent cheaper in the Czech Republic, which is unacceptable. “Butter is 76 percent more expensive in Slovakia, eggs are 22 percent more expensive,” said the head of the Slovak treasury.
