Education struggles with significant increase in job vacancies: “Working at school less pleasant” | Money

Amsterdam – The number of vacancies in the education sector has increased by 45% in two years to over 11,500. At the same time, the average number of applicants per position has halved to two.

This was reported by the National Vacancy Bank on Wednesday, International Education Day. According to Suzanne van Malsen from the job exchange, many people no longer find working at a school attractive. “There is a shortage of staff everywhere. This is a direct result of a higher workload. That’s not attractive and that’s one reason why people no longer want to work in education.”

Solution

Teaching staff received a 10% pay increase last year. But such a jump in wages ultimately does not solve the problem, says Van Malsen. “A raise sounds nice, but it’s essentially a short-term solution. Higher wages do not mean that there is suddenly no longer a heavy workload.”

Van Malsen believes that returning former teachers to education can be a solution, provided that this is not made attractive to them by not having too heavy a workload. “According to the General Education Union, there are 80,000 people with teaching qualifications who do not work in education,” she explains. “If 5% want to come back, then we’re talking about 4,000 jobs. That can have a big impact.”
