Police in the state of Illinois were searching for a 23-year-old man suspected of killing seven people, whose bodies were discovered in two houses in the city of Joliet on Monday afternoon. Investigators also believe that the discovery of the seven shooting victims is also related to Sunday’s incident in which another person was shot. The suspect was tracked down to Texas, where he committed suicide while attempting to arrest him.

Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans said at a news conference that at 12:04 a.m. local time Monday, his colleagues were notified by the Will County Sheriff’s Office of the discovery of several dead people in two different homes in the 2200 block of West Acres Road nearby Madison St. Evans added that responding police found a total of seven bodies in those homes, which faced each other across the street. According to him, all victims were shot.

The CBS News server reports that in connection with this case, local police were looking for 23-year-old Romeo Nance, who was reportedly driving a red Toyota Camry with an Illinois license plate. Evans added that Nance knew the victims. The police assume that the dead were relatives.

The vehicle in question was also recorded in an incident on Sunday when Will County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded late afternoon to the Pheasant Run Apartments on Pheasant Run Road in Joliet Township, where officials say they found a man walking out of a Gunshot wound was bleeding. The 28-year-old man, who was originally from Nigeria and had been living in the United States for about three years, was taken to a local hospital where he died a short time later.

Shortly before the Nigerian man was found shot, another shooting was reported on Davis Street in which a 42-year-old man was shot in the leg. The Will County Sheriff’s Office said the previous incidents appeared to be random and the two victims were unrelated. However, according to the sheriff’s office, the same car with the same license plate was seen at both locations in which the Nance they were looking for was believed to be in.

Will County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Jungles said investigators went to the address where the owner of the red Toyota was reportedly located during this incident. Since no one answered the knock on the door, they decided to go to relatives who lived in the house across the street. However, they found bloody footprints there, after which they decided to enter. According to Jungles, two bodies were eventually found in one house and a total of five dead in the house opposite.

“I’ve been a police officer for 25 years,” Evans said. “This is probably the worst crime I have ever investigated. The police are assuming that all the crimes on Sunday and Monday are connected.

Nance’s previous gun arrest records from 2023 indicate he also listed an Acres Road address as his home address. According to court records, Nance was released on bail in connection with the 2023 shooting and is still awaiting trial.

On Monday, Joliet police announced on Facebook that 23-year-old Romeo Nance was found near Natalie, Texas around 9:30 p.m. ET. During the confrontation with officers, suspect Nance shot himself.
