The Red Bull Driftbrothers brothers Joe and Eli Hountondji have been using a BMW M4 Competition for their daily drifting business for two years. With a spectacular design, a roof exhaust system and a rich sound, the brothers glide smoothly through race day and shows.
They specifically optimized the “tremendous” propulsion of the M4 using the S58 turbo engine from BMW M, which acts as the drive unit in the BMW M3 and M4 models as well as the X3 M and X4 M models. But the S58 engine they run with is exceptional! How many modifications and tuning does this inline-six engine have to go through to deliver more than 1,000 horsepower? “Yes, it can,” says Eli Hountondji, who has appeared in more than 30 events with the S58 engine. To provide definitive proof, aerospace engineers boxed up the engine and returned it to its birthplace for disassembly by BMW M experts.

After two years of driving, Eli and Joe Hountondji took their modified S58 engine to BMW M to take it apart and take a look inside. In the detailed analysis, the S58 was also compared with the famous Toyota 2JZ, which is very well-known in the modification industry and is also suitable for thousand horsepower modifications!
What is the difference?
How the tuned engine differs from the standard S58 engine. In their M4 racing car, Eli and Joe used not only a larger exhaust gas turbocharger but also a special fuel injection system with new software (MoTec), which was converted from a twin turbo to a double-row silicon carbide ball bearing. The Xona rotor features a single turbocharger, additional fuel injection in the intake manifold, a larger cooling package and an additional radiator at the rear of the vehicle, as well as a customized exhaust system. The cylinder head’s exhaust and intake ports are flow-optimized to handle the engine’s enormous horsepower. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons were neither changed nor replaced during the entire period and are completely original.
The result is clear
Despite its considerable horsepower (1,039 hp), it is in excellent condition and shows only minimal signs of wear. After dismantling the engine, the result was clear: despite the extremely high power output, which was often extremely high over a long period of time, the engine was still in good condition. There are no signs of wear on the pistons, combustion chambers, connecting rods, main bearings and crankshaft. The high-pressure injector is intact and 100% tight. The cylinder head gasket is also in very good condition.
Traces of a large amount of fuel injection can be seen in the inlet and outlet areas of the piston crown and cylinder head. These dark residues cannot be overlooked, but have no impact on the engine’s operating performance and reliability. The engine experts at BMW M are very happy and proud. Eli is also very happy about it and will be taking part in the next 30 drift events!
BMW M S58: The most iconic engine from M
When it was launched on the market in 2019, the BMW M S58 engine demonstrated not only a forged crankshaft, a closed water channel crankcase and a 350 bar fuel injection, but also its novel and first manufacturing process in the automotive industry: the 3D printed cylinder head. This process achieves complex geometries that cannot be produced using traditional manufacturing methods and can also significantly reduce weight compared to traditional casting methods, making this engine lighter and with a lower center of gravity than the previous generation M3 S55 engine /M4 The most important thing is that technology can make more complex cooling water channels, greatly improving the heat dissipation efficiency compared with traditional casting technology! This creates a stronger power output.
In the highest original configuration, the in-line six-cylinder engine installed in the BMW M4 CSL delivers a maximum of 550 hp. In addition, in all other BMW M models, the M3 and M4 series as well as the M2, X3 M and X4 M, it delivers the maximum performance that is most necessary for ultimate driving pleasure.
