The Henley Passport Index takes into account the possibility of visa-free travel or the possibility of obtaining a visa on site.
Currently at the top are Japanese, German, Spanish, Italian, French and Singaporean passports. They allow holders visa-free travel to 194 destinations. Finland, South Korea and Sweden share second place. Citizens of these countries can visit 193 destinations without having to apply for a visa.
Third place is shared by Austria, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands, and fourth place is shared by Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Great Britain and Portugal. Fifth place belongs jointly to Greece, Malta and Switzerland.
The decisive factor for the Czechs is sixth place, which they share with Australia, New Zealand and Poland. Compared to the previous year, the Czech Republic improved by one location and a total of three additional travel destinations, to which entry is possible either completely visa-free or with the option of issuing a visa on site. The Czech passport is even stronger than the American and Canadian ones. Both are in seventh place.
Afghanistan fares worst
“The average number of destinations travelers can visit more than doubled from 58 to 114 from 2006 to 2024,” Christian H. Kaelin, chairman of Henley & Partners, was quoted as saying by the Independent. Kaelin added that there is a big difference between the countries at the top of the rankings and Afghanistan, which is at the bottom. Citizens of this Middle Eastern country can only visit 28 destinations without a visa.
Syria, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia are also at the bottom of the rankings. It may come as a surprise that residents of Nepal (40 destinations) or Sri Lanka (43 destinations) also have a weak passport. You can find the complete ranking here.
