Courtois gives the reason for the devil’s uprising: “Not so much the captain’s armband”

The Red Devils want to go as far as possible in the final round of the 2024 European Championship. They can’t count on Thibaut Courtois, who has recovered. And the question is whether the top goalkeeper will even play for the national team.

There is no doubt about Courtois’ sporting qualities. When fit, he remains one of the best goalkeepers (if not the best) in the world and perhaps the best Belgian goalkeeper of all time. But last summer, Real Madrid’s key player made himself impossible by leaving the Red Devils prematurely and unilaterally after a much-discussed question of principle, in which the captaincy was also a point of contention.

Not just the captain’s armband

Courtois then decided to skip the European Championship qualifier in Estonia. However, you could rely on him. The fact that he was not allowed to wear the captain’s armband in the game against Austria, which marked his 100th international match, played a big role for the honorable goalkeeper. But that wasn’t the only reason for his one-sided loss.

In the VRT program peace on earth Finally, Courtois made it clear that he simply did not feel understood. “It wasn’t so much about the captain’s question. During the international match there were little or no conversations with me as a human being with feelings “I am not a robot. But hey: everyone is entitled to their opinion,” he said.

Future as a devil?

Since then, things have gone completely wrong between him and national coach Domenico Tedesco. In an interview shortly before Christmas, Courtois apologized to his teammates and fans. But in this conversation he also treated Tedesco mercilessly. It is therefore questionable whether the two can/will ever work together in an acceptable manner again.

However, Courtois does not want to end his career in the national team for the time being, even if the circumstances do not get any easier. “We’ll see what the future brings. I still want to keep the goal for Belgium, but I’m not getting any younger. I have the feeling that the European changes are weighing on me too. More injuries, … I hope that the Devils can go as far as possible in the EK.”
