The holiday season is almost synonymous with lavish food, and professional football players also like to indulge during the holidays. However, Thomas Meunier and his Borussia Dortmund teammates should be more careful at their Christmas dinner. The German club has taken a notable measure to prevent overweight players, the so-called Christmas kilos, from re-registering when training resumes.

The next game isn’t scheduled until January 13th, so Borussia Dortmund players had some time off to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. But that didn’t happen without conditions. Thomas Meunier explains how his employer wants to limit it and prevent Christmas kilos. “For every kilo gained, a fine of 1,000 euros is due. And if you go too far, it even becomes 1000 euros per hundred grams,” our compatriot told RTBF.

Meunier has been playing for Borussia since the summer of 2020 and speaks from experience when it comes to the club’s remarkable approach to the holidays. The right-back doesn’t seem to have too much trouble keeping himself in check at Christmas dinner, but last season one of his team-mates was hit with a hefty fine. “I won’t name any names, but someone had to pay a fine of around 10,000 euros. If he lost the kilos quickly, he could avoid the fine and he succeeded,” laughed Meunier.
