The number of dengue cases recorded in Brazil in the first two weeks of 2024 was more than twice as high as in the same period last year, according to data from the country’s health ministry, local media reported.
During this period, 55,859 probable cases were registered this year and six people died as a result of the disease, while on the same days in 2023, 26,801 cases and 17 deaths were registered.
Such an increase in infections comes against the background of the Brazilian Ministry of Health’s announcement that only 3.2 million people can be vaccinated with the available doses of the dengue vaccine in 2024.
Brazil is the first country in the world to offer the vaccine against this disease in its public system.
Dengue fever is considered by health authorities to be the most widespread urban arbovirus in the Americas, particularly in Brazil, transmitted through the bite of the female Aedes aegypti mosquito.
“The season with the greatest transmission of the disease occurs during the rainiest months of each region, generally November to May,” the ministry explains.
In this regard, Luana Araújo, infectious disease specialist, explained that the scenario for 2024 is “extremely worrying” due to the El Niño phenomenon, which is accompanied by intense heat and abundant rainfall.
“That’s all the mosquito needs,” explains the expert.
Fight against mosquitoes
Since stagnant water contributes to the reproduction of insects, it is recommended to avoid such accumulations, as mosquito eggs can survive in the environment for a year.
To do this, it is necessary to eliminate breeding grounds or keep tanks and all places used for water storage covered.
For this purpose, the Ministry of Health distributed around 30 tons of insecticides to combat larvae and adult mosquitoes.
However, Araújo stressed that it is the responsibility of citizens themselves to take care of their homes to limit the spread of insects.
In this sense, he recalled some spaces that can favor the spread of mosquitoes: such as “plant plates”, “water bottles”, “patio fountains”, “ornamental fountains”, “tanks”, etc.
