Apple launched the first phone with a 3nm chip. iPhones will continue to be equipped with brand new chips in the future.
Apple is the largest customer of TSMC, which in turn is the largest chip manufacturer in the world. This means the iPhone manufacturer can always claim the latest, fastest and most advanced chips. This started in 2020 when the company released the first smartphone with a 5nm chip. Last year, TSMC manufactured the 3nm chips for the iPhone 15 and related models. Apple will also receive the latest chips next year and the company wants to integrate 2nm chips into its devices.
This means phones will become faster and more efficient. When moving from 5nm chips to 3nm chips, performance increased across the board. With the same energy consumption, the CPU calculations are about 10% faster and the GPU speed is 20% faster than the older chips. New chips also bring additional possibilities for AI: The A17 Pro’s Neural Engine is twice as fast as that of a 5nm chip. This makes the chips more powerful, but also works more efficiently: a 3 nm chip requires less energy to perform the same computing work.
That doesn’t make 3nm chips perfect: there is still room for improvement. This would arrive in the second half of 2025 in the form of TSMC’s first 2nm chips. Apple already has plans for a chipset manufactured using the 2nm process.
TSMC wants to start producing 1.4nm chips by 2027. According to MacRumors, Apple already wants to pre-order the first chips. The same applies to 1nm chips. It is not yet known when these could go into production, but Apple is also involved. This should make it clear: Apple also wants to equip its iPhones with the latest chip technology in the coming years.
