AMSTERDAM – An 84-year-old woman who died last weekend after a fire in her home on Van Speijkstraat in Amsterdam may have died as a result of a crime, according to police. The woman was found in the house last Friday with multiple stab wounds. A 90-year-old man was arrested as a suspect.
The public prosecutor confirmed that the man and woman were partners. They therefore lived together at the address in question.
On January 19th, emergency services were alerted at around 9:30 a.m. to reports of a fire in the couple’s apartment. The fire brigade found the injured woman on site and she was taken to hospital. She died there from her injuries on Saturday. The police suspect that the 90-year-old man is involved in the violence against the woman and the arson.
Although, according to the police, the fire was brought under control relatively quickly, the boarded up door of the house remained a silent witness to the incident a few days later.
A neighbor reacts with shock to the news. “It’s terrible what happened. I regularly saw the elderly gentleman accompanied by a woman who looked after him. Otherwise, I didn’t know her well.” According to the neighbor, the 90-year-old wasn’t always “so clear of mind.”
The elderly man was arrested on Friday. On Monday, the examining judge decided that the man would remain in custody for another two weeks.
