Alligators froze in the pond, only their nostrils sticking out of the ice

“His eyes are closed and only his nostrils protrude to breathe,” commented George Howard, general manager of Swamp Park. “The whole body floats beneath the surface, it’s fantastic,” he added.

Howard didn’t hide his excitement, the last time he saw this phenomenon in the park was a few years ago. However, the phenomenon did not last long, on Tuesday it became warmer and the reptiles were freed from the icy grip. There are currently 12 alligators living in the reserve that could not be released into the wild.

The alligators in Gator Country, Texas, behaved the same way. “If you look directly below you, you will see an alligator with its snout sticking up so it can take in oxygen and breathe. “Guys, it’s amazing, this is how alligators survive in the ice,” describes park owner Gary Saurage in the published video.

They survive by humming

Alligators are ectothermic animals that cannot heat their own bodies. However, under the influence of low water temperature, they can lower their body temperature and slow down their metabolism, which is technically called brumation. This way it will last for several months before warming up.

This mechanism is largely similar to hibernation. However, unlike her, reptiles are awake during humming and can therefore occasionally show activity.
