According to the newspaper, the confidential warning came after the US received information that the affiliate of the terrorist Islamic State in Afghanistan, which calls itself Islamic State – Khorasan (IS-K), was planning an attack on Iran.

“The leaked information contained a sufficiently accurate description of the attack site and was obtained by the Iranians in time to be of use to Tehran in its attempt to thwart the January 3 attack or at least reduce the number of casualties,” said an unnamed US official told the Wall Street Journal.

The Americans did not say which channels they used to warn Iran or when exactly they transmitted the information.

According to one of the sources, the threat warning was part of a longstanding “duty to warn foreign governments of events that could result in death.”

One of the reasons for the warning, the newspaper said, may have been to prevent Iran from responding to the attack in a way that could cause further instability in the volatile Middle East region and undermine Washington’s interests there.

Iranian officials did not respond to the American warning, the source told the newspaper, adding that it was also unclear why they did not foil the attack.

Bloodshed in Kerman

According to Iranian authorities, nine dozen people, including thirty children, were killed in the terrorist attack on January 3 by two suicide bombers at a cemetery in Kerman, Iran.

Two terrorists detonated explosive belts on their bodies at a memorial ceremony marking the fourth anniversary of the death of General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a US assassination attempt in Baghdad in 2020.

IS claimed responsibility for the bloodshed at the Kerman cemetery. Speculation about his involvement began almost immediately after the circumstances of the explosions became known. The first explosion occurred on January 3 at around 12:20 pm our time in a crowd about 700 meters from Soleimani’s grave.

The second explosion, this time in a crowd rushing to help victims of the first explosion, occurred about 15 minutes later. It was this time lag that was seen on ISIS.

Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami said at the victims’ funeral that he would avenge the dead. Tehran immediately announced large-scale raids and arrests. Despite the confession, ISIS claimed the trail led to Israel and the United States, its biggest enemies.
