Alcaraz solves the scare in Indian Wells with an exhibition

Carlos Alcaraz has had few quiet games lately. The Murcian is getting used to the unexpected, complications and scares. His debut in Indian Wells was no different, against the Italian Matteo Arnaldi, world number 40, in which he had to come back from a set down to get into the second round, 6-7 (5), 6-0 and 6-1. The final exhibition, started with that donut in the second set, covered up Alcaraz giving up his first set in a tournament in which he is defending his title and in which Arnaldi was making his first appearance in a final draw.

Better on clay than on cement, the Italian eliminated fellow earthling Luca van Assche in the first round and scared the Florida spectators to attempt the big surprise of the tournament, the loss of the champion. Alcaraz, despite having a break lead in the first set, gave it up in the tie break, at the mercy of three points lost on his own serve. The Spaniard was not hitting first serves (53%) and was barely winning seconds (47%) and, thanks to this poor statistic, he lost the fifth set in his history in Indian Wells. The previous four came in the defeat against Andy Murray in his debut in 2021 and against Rafa Nadal in the 2022 semifinals. The rest of the matches that Alcaraz has played on these courts have been won in straight sets.

The company needed an improvement in level, and Alcaraz achieved it. The second set was impeccable. He did not improve the percentage of firsts, but the Spaniard turned off the errors with second and only lost one point on serve in the entire set. If it weren’t for the five break balls that escaped him with 5-0 in favor, the result would have been even more scandalous. Had he taken advantage of the first one he had in that game, he would have barely given up five points in total. Arnaldi made up for it, saving five break opportunities, but he took the rosco and a call for attention from Alcaraz, who did not let up and left the set at 10-0 at the beginning of the third set.

“I was a little surprised by the conditions,” admitted Alcaraz, who during the previous days had trained during the day and not at night, when his debut match was scheduled. «It is totally different to play during the day than at night. With the sun and the heat the bounces are totally different, the ball goes different, and it cost me the entire first set. I had to change my game, but after the first set I understood. “I played better and I felt better,” he highlighted.

“A little nervous”

Arnaldi, who has two victories against the top ten, against Casper Ruud in Madrid 2023 and against Taylor Fritz in Acapulco 2024, stopped the beating at 3-1 in the third set and had two opportunities to recover his serve, the first from the first sleeve. However, Alcaraz saved them and won the next three games to achieve his eleventh victory in this tournament and forget the ankle problem that ruined his tour of South America.

«This was my first high-intensity game (since the sprained ankle) and I didn’t know how I was going to respond. There were many things coming to mind. “I couldn’t be 100% focused on the game and I was a little nervous,” said the Murcian.

The Spaniard, who defends last year’s 1,000 points in this edition of Indian Wells, will face the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round, who beat Constant Lestienne in two sets. Auger-Aliassime has the measure of Alcaraz and has beaten him three times, although his last duel, in Indian Wells 2023, was won by the Murcian.

Around 70,000 “dead” bank accounts in which money is still standing. Invites to solve a painful problem for the residents

Edgars Pastars, the senior legal advisor of the Financial Industry Association, tells Latvian Radio what to do with the money in the bank account of a deceased relative.

“As it happens in life – usually they take the deceased’s bank card and go to withdraw money for the funeral. Usually over a hundred, 300, 400 euros, which is also not very legal, but the financial sector understands these things and we do not report them, if they are in a reasonable amount, of course .

If the inheritance is not significant enough, therefore, none of his relatives registers it with a notary, as a result of which there are balances in the accounts – one hundred, two hundred, three hundred euros,” says the expert.

The industry association calls for the regulation to be improved so that there is no need to wait 60 years for this money to be included in the bank’s income.

“This money should go to the state revenues much faster,” says Pastars.

Meanwhile, the managing director of the Council of Sworn Notaries of Latvia, Gatis Litvins, tells Latvijas Radio that if there are a few hundred euros in a bank account, relatives most often do not start the inheritance process, and problems arise if the deposits are in banks located in foreign countries.

“If within the European Union, then somehow a notary can trigger the instruments provided for by the European Union legislation. But if the accounts are in third countries, then the situation is close to hopeless. And the same also applies to all these modern digital assets like cryptocurrency and so on ,” Litvins explains to Latvian Radio.

Latvian banks have about 70,000 accounts whose owners have died, but the money remains, reports Latvian Radio.
