AFRICA WOMEN’S CUP – ANSONIANDRO ANDRIANOROSOA

Antsoniandro Andrianorosoa, national technical director of Malagasy Rugby, monitors the preparation of the Malagasy national rugby team for the Africa Women’s Cup, from May 4 to 12. Interview.

Antsoniandro Andrianorosoa, where are we in the preparation of the Malagasy national team for the 2024 Africa Cup?

The preparation is taking its course and will intensify from this week. The Ladies Makis have entered into blocked training since Monday afternoon. This blocked internship is of capital importance because, from that moment on, they are cut off from the outside world to only think about the preparation itself.

How did you find the players’ form and their complicity on the pitch?

In general, everything is not yet perfect, especially in terms of coordination of attack and defense. This is why the blocked internship serves to correct these deficiencies. By the start of the competition, major improvements in all areas of the game will be made and the objective is to be ready on the big day against the Kenyans on the first day.

Compared to last year’s match, at the end of which we lost (20-29) to Kenya, how do you find the level of the Kenyans currently?

Of the four participating countries of South Africa, Kenya, Madagascar and Cameroon, Kenya is not to be underestimated. It’s a rugby country and the ladies are constantly evolving. Our defeat in 2023 against this country was due to a strategic error which must not be repeated this year at home. Before, we came out victorious against Kenya, so for me, it takes determination and above all the rage to win. And the Malagasy spectators must get behind the Ladies Makis to beat Kenya.

And South Africa?

South Africa is number one in Africa. The country remains the big favorite in the continental joust. But playing at home, with the help of the public, will be important and everything is possible in sport. The Ladies Makis are ready to shake them up and they must play without complexes. They must be strong physically and mentally. Against the South Africans, you have to ensure the tackle and play on the counter quickly.

Compared to last year’s workforce, is there a notable change for Madagascar? How many expatriates will come?

Eight or ten new faces have joined the ranks. They are young and full of enthusiasm and audacity. Only the expatriate from France, Jeanne Marie Louise Sorin, will join the Malagasy women’s rugby union selection for the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup.

What is Madagascar’s chance of securing one of the two qualifying places for the 2025 World Cup?

We are in the home stretch of preparation. Reaching the World Cup, at least in category B, is possible. We have two ways to achieve it: beat Kenya and Cameroon, especially score a lot of goals against the latter.
