A woman had an unpleasant experience while doing normal shopping when she fell heavily in the store and broke her thumb. Because of this, the woman appealed to the court, which concluded that the store was responsible for her injuries. He now has to pay almost 200,000 crowns for this.
An unpleasant event occurred in July when a woman went shopping in the village of Slatina in eastern Croatia. In the NTL chain store, she went to the refrigerated food section. According to the court ruling, she “slipped on a puddle of water that was caused by a leak in the cooling device.”
“She fell to the ground and suffered a fracture of the lower part of the thumb bone on the thumb of her right hand,” Croatian website Danica.hr quoted the verdict as saying. “I immediately felt pain in my right hand and it swelled. I only managed to get up with the help of my daughter,” said the injured woman.
A witness who allegedly slipped and sprained his leg in the same spot the day before also testified in court. “I went to the same store the next day after I got back from work. I heard something happening and saw a woman trying to get up from the ground. There was water on the floor and the woman fell in the same place where I slipped the day before,” the man said.
The NTK company denies the lawsuit, stating that “the woman has not proven that the injury occurred in the store in question and that the inspection did not reveal any irregularities and none of the NTK employees saw her fall or has injured himself in any way,” the Dnevnik website reported.
Nevertheless, the judge upheld the lawsuit and awarded the woman compensation of 6,250 euros (around 155,000 crowns). NTK also has to pay court costs of 1,500 euros (around 37,000 crowns). The verdict is not yet legally binding.
Croatia is in serious danger. The European Union has published an interesting map (December 23rd):
