A massive landslide in a mountainous region in southeastern China killed 47 people on Monday. At least eight people died. The rescuers’ work is also made more difficult by the weather, with temperatures there being just below freezing.

The accident occurred in Liang-shui village in Yunnan province shortly before 6 a.m. local time on Monday (before 11 p.m. CET on Sunday). According to authorities, the landslide buried people in 18 households, Al Jazeera reports.

Hundreds of residents had to leave the village and evacuate. At least eight people have died and dozens more are missing. However, the causes of the landslide are still unknown. More than 200 rescuers, 10 excavators and 33 fire engines are deployed to search for those trapped.

The weather also makes the work of the rescuers more difficult. Temperatures in the region are just below freezing and the ground is covered in snow. Shortly before noon, the units managed to find a survivor.

One of the residents described to the media that everything happened while they were sleeping. “It was very loud. And everything shook. “It was like a big earthquake,” the BBC quoted the woman as saying. According to the forecast, there will be more snow in the area in the coming days.
