A great rise for Birkenthal in the pursuit of the European Championship; also manages to overtake Rastorgujev

Victory went to Norwegian Isak Frei, who, after finishing third in the sprint on Saturday, made three shooting errors but finished first, covering the distance in 32 minutes and 42.1 seconds.

After finishing 36th in the sprint, Birkenthal made a mistake in the second prone shooting, finishing tenth and losing one minute and 22 seconds to the winner.

Rastorgujev, who was fourth in the sprint, made two errors while shooting prone and five times while standing and finished 13th in the 55-athlete event, losing one minute, 33.3 seconds on the free.

Rastorgujev, who missed out on a medal and finished fourth in the 10-kilometer standing sprint on Friday, started the chase 26 seconds behind France’s Antonin Gigon, who won the sprint, and 11 and nine seconds behind Norway’s Juhana Łava Botna and Ísak Frei, who finished with medals. Birkenthal started the chase 106 seconds after Gigona.

Rastorgujev has the entire set of medals in the sprint at the European Championships, as well as a gold medal in the 20-kilometer individual distance and a bronze medal in the pursuit. The Latvian lost the gold medal won in the 2021 “Classic” due to a disqualification.

Meanwhile, Sanita Buliņa made ten errors in the ten-kilometer pursuit and finished 53rd. The winner was Norwegian Marene Kirkeide, who came second in the sprint. She finished with two penalties in 29 minutes and 49.9 seconds.

Buliņa, who finished 60th in the sprint and started Saturday two and a half minutes behind sprint winner Idan Liena of Norway, started with three penalties in the first prone stage and added two penalties after the second stage. She made five more errors in the standing stage, but was not caught by the circle, finishing 53rd in the competition with 55 athletes, losing seven minutes and 59.1 seconds to the winner.

Another Norwegian, Emilie Ogheim Kalkenberg, finished second with two shooting penalties, 11.1 seconds behind the winner, while France’s Oceana Michelon was third with two penalties, 27.1 seconds behind Kirkeide. Liena finished fourth with four shooting errors, 1.4 seconds behind the medals.

Edgars Mise, Gints Lūsis and Annie Sabule did not qualify for the pursuit.

On Sunday the biathletes will compete against each other in mixed relays.

Continuing the season, the World Cup will take place from February 7th to 18th in the Czech city of Nove Mesto, and the next stage of the World Cup will take place in Oslo in early February/March.
