The giant claw was discovered by members of the New Zealand Speleological Society.
Archaeologists were traversing the Mount Owen cave system in New Zealand when they made an astonishing discovery, archaeologyworld.com reports. It was a claw that looked like it belonged to a dinosaur. And to her surprise, it still had muscle and skin tissue attached.
They later discovered that the mysterious claws belonged to an extinct species of flying bird called a moa. These moas, native to New Zealand, unfortunately became extinct around 700 to 800 years ago.
Therefore, archaeologists later suggested that the mummified moa claw must have been more than 3,300 years old after its discovery.
The Moa lineage probably began about 80 million years ago on the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. Moa, derived from the Polynesian word for fowl, includes three families, six genera and nine species.
There are species of different sizes, some are about the size of a turkey while others are larger than an ostrich. Of the nine species, the two largest are about 12 feet tall and weigh about 510 pounds.
