I have – Up to 100 residents in Nagari Village or Bukit Batabuah, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, are in the red zone or areas declared unsafe by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Risk Reduction (PVMBG) due to the eruption of Mount Marapi .

“100 of our residents are within 4.5 kilometers or in the unsafe zone of Mount Marapi in Jorong Batang Salasiah Rubai Cumantiang,” said Wali Nagari or head of Bukit Batabuah Firdaus Village on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.

He also regretted that the preparedness mapping at the joint coordination meeting with BPBD, TNI-Polri and PVMBG did not explain whether there were residential areas within it.

The eruption of Mount Marapi was accompanied by a loud bang on Saturday morning, December 30, 2023

“We regret that because there are several residential buildings on the map that are not on the map and are not recognized within a 4.5 kilometer radius,” said Firdaus.

Before that there were community settlements. For example, in Tabek Gadang and Rubai Cumantiang areas, there is a small area called Bareco. “It’s not on the map,” he said.

He stressed that residents within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the Marapi peak could receive comprehensive education around the slopes of the mountain to prepare for disasters.

“What is most needed right now is valid information so that residents can understand it, because when we and the disaster preparedness group share it, sometimes it is not accepted,” he said.

Even if residents think that Level III is safe and Level II is unsafe, this information does not work optimally.

Meanwhile, district administration assistant Agam Rahman said the government could not yet confirm whether there were residents living within a 4.5-kilometer radius, so actual mapping needed to be done.

“This is the data collection that needs to be done. We will again collect data on whether those on the slopes of Mount Marapi belong to this zone. “Perhaps the residents were anxious to communicate this, but apparently not, so it is certain,” he said. (Ant)
