The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, spoke about the reaction of the European Parliament to information about the US and Danish surveillance of European politicians. TASS reports her words.
The diplomat emphasized that cyber espionage against an EU country by a non-European state is the “direct sphere of responsibility” of the European Parliament. She was surprised at the lack of reaction from the representatives of the association.
Zakharova also called on parliamentarians to discuss the landing of a Ryanair flight in Berlin. She recommended that the European authorities “draw some parallels”, compare the incidents and ask themselves about the similarities and differences of this situation with the emergency landing of the same airline in Minsk.
On May 31, the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper wrote about the US National Security Agency’s surveillance of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. According to the newspaper, the Danish intelligence services provided the Americans with access to a special station near Copenhagen, from where the wiretapping was conducted.
A Ryanair passenger plane made an emergency landing in Berlin after a bomb threat was reported on board on 30 May. The board was checked by law enforcement officers – no explosives were found. However, all passengers were evacuated and their luggage was screened. Another emergency landing of an Irish company liner en route from Athens to Vilnius took place on 23 May in Minsk after reports of a bomb. Immediately after landing, the Belarusian security forces detained Roman Protasevich, the creator of the NEXTA Telegram channel, who was on board.
