Many people sometimes sleep an hour too little during the week. You can’t just make up for that on the weekend, according to most experts. Still, sleeping in on Saturday and Sunday is healthy. It reduces the risk of depression, according to new research.
Researchers from South Korea’s Yonsei University examined 5,500 people who regularly missed an hour of sleep on weekdays. If they slept two extra hours on the weekend, they had a 48 percent lower risk of depression. One hour more sleep reduces the risk of depression by a third. However, those who slept more than two hours extra on the weekend had a greater chance of depression.
The best thing is if you don’t need that extra sleep on the weekend and just sleep 7 to 9 hours every day of the week. But if that doesn’t work, sleeping in is really a good idea.
