The Ironman World Championships traditionally take place in Kailua-Kona (Hawaii). Despite Corona complications, a date has been set for the next competitions. Here you can find out when the triathlon in Hawaii will take place.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic is causing numerous deadlines to be postponed worldwide. This is also the case with the Ironman World Championships, which were originally planned for October 9, 2021, but had to be postponed.

A new date for the next competitions is already known. The venue is also new. For the first time since 1978, the World Championships will not be held in Hawaii on May 7, 2022, but in St. George in the US state of Utah. The organizer, the Ironman Group, confirmed this in a press release.

In the meantime, February 5, 2022 was the new date. Because of the planning uncertainty in Hawaii, nothing came of it, as February is considered the main travel time and therefore not enough accommodation is available.

Ironman: when does the triathlon take place in Hawaii?

In October 2022, however, the Ironman World Championships should take place again as usual in Kailua-Kona. Compared to the previous triathlon world championships, there will be two days of competition. The women start on October 6th, the men then on October 8th.

It is therefore clear that – as in 1982 – the World Championships will take place twice in one calendar year if the October date should not be postponed next year. The plan was to hold two Ironman World Championships as early as 2021, after the competition was postponed from 2020 to February 2021. But this was also canceled.

Ironman: how is the triathlon in Hawaii going?

The triathlon is an endurance competition in which three sports are completed consecutively and without interruption, namely swimming, running and cycling.

The World Championships usually start in Kailua-Kona. The athletes first swim 3.86 kilometers out to sea and back again. The swim is followed by a 180.2-kilometer bike ride through the lava fields on the Queen K Highway. The bike section is followed by the marathon run. The participants run a little more than 42 kilometers until they reach the finish line on Ali’i Drive in Kona, where the exhausting competition comes to an end.
